Photonic crystal heteroslab-edge microcavity with high quality factor surface mode for index sensing
In this report, we propose a photonic crystal heteroslab-edge microcavity design for optical index sensing, where the high quality Q surface mode is confined by mode-gap effect. By optimizing the barrier region of the microcavity, high Q factor of 6.6 105 is obtained in simulations. Lasing actions with high Q factor and low threshold of 6400 and 0.55 mW are obtained from the real devices. High ...
متن کاملHigh-index sensitivity of surface mode in photonic crystal hetero-slab-edge microcavity.
We introduce a photonic crystal hetero-slab-edge microcavity design with surface mode, which is beneficial for optical index sensing. The simulated index sensitivity (R(n)) as high as 675 nm per refractive index unit (nm/RIU) variation is obtained with slab thickness of 180 nm. In experiments, single surface mode lasing action from a real device is observed. Based on the surface mode in this mi...
متن کاملSpectral linewidth in microcavity surface-emitting lasers
The Schawlow-Townes expression for the laser linewidth predicts a substantial cw linewidth enhancement in microcavity lasers, in which a large fraction of spontaneous emission is directed into the lasing mode, in contrast with conventional semiconductor lasers, in which the lasing mode accepts only a tiny fraction of spontaneously emitted photons. By performing a theoretical analysis of rigorou...
متن کاملWhispering-gallery-mode emission from biological luminescent protein microcavity assemblies.
Fluorescence and bioluminescence are widely used to study biological systems from molecular to whole organism level. However, their broadband emission is often a bottleneck for sensitive spectral measurements and multiplexing. To overcome the limitation, the emitters can be coupled with optical cavity modes to generate narrowband spectral features. Here we demonstrate several types of emitter-r...
متن کاملCharacterization of Optical Microcavity Whispering-gallery-mode Resonators
In the past decade, optical microcavity whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators have received increasing attention for applications in optical communications and nanotechnology. In this paper, the theory for describing radiation transfer and heat transfer in the micro/nanoscale devices is presented first. Then the characteristics of waveguide-microdisk coupling WGM miniature resonators are num...
